ATAC Safe Routes to School working group, 2017-18
As part of an ATAC working group, Cycle Stratford has helps to create a School Travel Plan Project to encourage children to walk or wheel to school in Stratford. Lead by Kathy Vassilakos, the group was able to establish a relationship with the Catholic School Board, and in the fall of 2017 we launched School Travel Plans at St. Joseph's Elementary School and St. Aloysius Elementary School. At each school. data was collected from the students and families, and then a program to encourage active transportation to school was launched. The program included sharing information about the importance of active transportation, as well as special "walk and wheel" to school events and a bike rodeo. The final phase of the project will be to again collect data from students and families to measure whether the program has been effective in encouraging more walking and cycling to school. In September, we hope to launch School Travel Plan projects in some public schools in Stratford as well.
